INTENT - Interdisciplinary Teaching and Training 4.0

Increasing digitalisation is leading to changes in work and business processes. The operational performance process is increasingly characterised by the fact that Cyber-Physical-Systems interact and are networked with each other. For this reason, the operational performance creation process is being reorganised. This naturally also leads to changed competence requirements. In addition to other soft skills, understanding between different disciplines in the company is also becoming increasingly important. An understanding of each other at the individual interfaces of the process chain is becoming increasingly important.

In this project, the partner consortium has developed training modules for VET teachers and in-company trainers that improve their methodology, e.g. regarding interdisciplinary project-oriented and work-based learning, designing action-oriented, complex learning arrangements, increased use of digital tools, improved project and classroom management, etc.

The project coped with the European priorities "Initial and continuous professional development of VET teachers, trainers and mentors in both school and work-based settings", and "Supporting the uptake of innovative approaches and digital technologies for teaching and learning"

The Impact of the Digital Revolution

Digital revolution, internet of things, Industry 4.0 – these are keywords for the current development in the economy. Digitalization, further automatization, globalized internetworking are big challenges for the future of the working world and for vocational education and training (VET) and further education, too.

The working world is highly dynamic, especially in the high-tech oriented sectors like electronics, mechatronics etc. Digitalization, globalization and internetworking are changing and challenging all kinds of enterprises, the big ones equally to the small and medium ones – although the peculiarities may vary. In order to keep VET sustainable, it is important to adapt the training betimes and foster a broad consensus and a close cooperation between teachers, learners, VET providers, companies, social partners and chambers

The Challenge of Industry 4.0 for VET

In order to maintain a competitive and innovative economy, it is important that already during VET the basis is provided to face the recent development in “working world 4.0” properly. Professional tasks and required competences will change Europe-wide respectively world- wide, thus, the instruments to face it should not be national ones but European or international ones. All in common is that the future development is rather unpredictable and that teachers, trainers, workers and VET students are challenged to learn and to acquire new competences for a new world of work. So far, this development is not yet a topic in curricula although in some companies working world 4.0 has started to be already reality.

The Challenge of interdisciplinary cooperation

The digital transformation leads to changed competence profiles. Executive activities are increasingly giving way to supervisory activities. In particular, a basic knowledge of information technology is becoming increasingly relevant, which means that an understanding of the interface of the process chain is becoming more and more important. In industrial professions, the cooperation between different professions and the understanding of each other is therefore becoming more and more important.
